Frequently Asked Questions

A Tobin Fraley signature carousel series created by Willitts Designs.  Every Willitts/Tobin Fraley original will have a coin inset in the base identifying it as a Tobin Fraley, and Tobin Fraley's signature will appear on the horse's belly.  If it doesn't have both, it could be mismatched (wrong horse with base or wrong base with horse), misidentified, or else a copy (a few of these have begun to surface now that Willitts is no longer producing them, but most are properly identified by the new company name and do not bear Tobin's name incorrectly on either base or horse).

There are also a lot of rebadged Fraley pieces surfacing now.  The base will have a coin that says "Tyler Vincent Limited" on it.  The horse and base will be true Tobin Fraley pieces, though often they are mismatched (for example, the horse will be a Fourth Edition and the base a Third Edition).  They are true Fraleys, just not official Fraleys.  I contacted Willitts to ask them about these, but never got a reply (they also told me some time ago that they'd send me as full a list of Willitts pieces as they could come up with, and they never did).  My guess is that these "Tyler Vincent" pieces were leftover non-sellers and they just decided to get rid of their inventory and let someone else put their name to them instead.  I'll put up some examples of them later.

There will also be a symbol that identifies the edition (as well as the coin stating the edition for every one except the Intro and First editions).  An example of the signature/symbol and coin are with each edition.

All the identifications in this section were made using the Collector's Guide in the back of Tobin Fraley's book, "Carousels:  The Myth, The Magic, and the Memories", published in 1991 by Willitts Designs Publishing.  There seems to be some confusion between the year the book gives for each edition and the year that is physically on the horse's belly (in the later editions, the earlier ones were not dated on the belly).  I've given the years the book gives, though the horse/certificate may bear a date of the previous year.

Introductory Edition (1986)

Fraley Intro Edition, Signature and Coin
Coin says - "Willitts Designs, the Tobin Fraley collection, Limited Edition"

Large and Medium Carousels (6" and greater)

(I combined 'large' and 'medium' because the only difference between the two in this edition is the presence or absence of the canopied base - the figures themselves are the same size whether the canopy is there or not.  The four-horse carousel in this edition is the only truly 'large' figure).

There are many more in this series, that I don't have pictures of or haven't listed. If you have any you'd like to have added, send me a photo and description (including the 'run number' on the base and basic size of the figure), and I'll add it. If you have a horse you think is a Fraley and want it identified, send me a pic and I'll tell you what it is if I know it.
